Raytown Schools prepares for the Great American Solar Eclipse
Posted on 08/14/2017

On Monday, August 21, Raytown will be just outside of the path of totality of the Great American Solar Eclipse. While Raytown is just outside of the path of totality, students in grades 3-12 along with staff will witness a partial solar eclipse with a magnitude of 0.999 or 99.96% of totality. Students in grades K-2 will participate in learning activities inside the classroom and will view televised coverage of the eclipse. The eclipse will begin at 11:42 a.m. reach its peak at 1:09 p.m. and partial totality will last for only 27 seconds.

Safety is always a top priority and we will take all precautionary measures necessary to make this once in a lifetime experience both safe and enjoyable for all students and staff. Through a Raytown Educational Foundation grant, Raytown Schools has purchased eclipse-safe viewing glasses, which are compliant with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard, for all students and staff.

Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun. Students and staff will not be permitted to look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun through unfiltered cameras, telescopes, binoculars, or other optical devices with or without eclipse-safe glasses.

Because of these safety concerns, a parent/guardian is required by Friday, August 18 in order for students to participate using the eclipse glasses. Students whose parents either do not complete this form or choose to opt out their child will view televised coverage and complete an alternative activity from inside the school building during the eclipse.

Check out the video below featuring Tyler Britt, Curriculum and Instructional Practice Coordinator, and Jeff Haynes, Secondary Science Curriculum Coordinator, for more information about the eclipse viewing experience for students and staff.
